Every spring, thousands of Canadians from coast to coast lace up their sneakers to participate in the World Partnership Walk, Canada’s largest public movement dedicated to fighting global poverty. 

With over 700 million people living on less than $2.15 a day, I’m raising funds that empower vulnerable communities and individuals break the cycle of poverty. Donating to my fundraise campaign will support transformative programs that improve access to quality education, essential health services, food security, and sustainable livelihoods worldwide.

It Takes a Village. Apparently Ours Spans a Continent.

Saturday 30th May
We are speechless. Which, if you know us, is not a thing that happens often.

When we started this fundraiser, we set a goal of $5,000. Then $6,000. Then $7,000. We kept raising the bar because you kept clearing it — and today, on the eve of the walk, we are sitting at nearly $18,000. With more on the way.

But honestly? The number that got us isn’t the dollar amount. It’s 66 donations. 66 people — friends, family, colleagues, and community — from across North America who looked at two small boys and a wagon and said yes, we’re in.

That’s a village. Our village. And it turns out ours is a big one.

Tomorrow, Ilaan and Issa will lace up their shoes (we will lace up their shoes — they are six and three) and walk every step of that 5K course. They don’t fully understand the scope of what this community has done this week. But they will. We’re going to make sure of it.

To every single person who donated, shared, or clicked that link 519 times — thank you. You didn’t just help us reach a goal. You showed our kids what it looks like when people show up for each other.

Now if you’ll excuse us, we have a wagon to pack. 🚶‍♂️🚶‍♂️

Three days left. We’ve blown past $6,000. And we are absolutely not done.

We’re raising the goal to $7,000 — because apparently this family doesn’t know how to stop, and frankly neither do you, and we love that about us.

But here’s the real news: every donation made now is being matched — up to $50 per donation — as part of a broader matching program across the World Partnership Walk. That means your $50 becomes $100. Your $25 becomes $50. You do the math. (We did. It’s good math.)

The match runs until $50,000 in matched funds is reached, so don’t wait on this one.

3 days. A new goal. A matching opportunity. And two very motivated small children who have been tracking this fundraiser like it’s their full-time job.

We have a thing for the number five this week.

5 days until the World Partnership Walk. A 5K course. And as of today — we’ve surpassed our $5,000 fundraising goal. 🎉

We are, as a family, completely insufferable about this. The boys have been informed. They are taking partial credit. We are letting them.

But here’s the thing about overachievers: we don’t stop at the goal. We raise the goal. So we’ve moved the target to $6,000 — and honestly, if you want to make us raise it again, we welcome the challenge.

5 days left. If you’ve been meaning to donate and haven’t yet — this is your moment. The window is closing, the walk is almost here, and the boys are absolutely keeping score.

Year Three. No Excuses. (Looking at You, Three-Year-Old.)

Saturday 23rd May
We’re doing the World Partnership Walk again. Third year running. At this point it’s basically a family tradition we can’t get out of — not that we’d want to.

For the uninitiated: we started this in downtown Toronto when our boys were four and one. It was adorable. It was also a lot of wagon-pulling. Year two we moved to Downsview — more space, less traffic, more things for small people to investigate — and something miraculous happened. Our kids, then five and two, walked the entire course. Every step. Without bribery. (Okay, there may have been snacks involved.)

This year they’re six and three. They have been informed the wagon is for emergencies only. Last year we did it in toques, which tells you everything you need to know about spring in Toronto. This year we’re cautiously optimistic. 

But here’s why we keep showing up: for over 40 years, the World Partnership Walk has raised funds to empower vulnerable communities across Africa and Asia to break the cycle of poverty — over $151 million since 1985, across more than 180 initiatives in over a dozen countries. It’s the real deal. And it’s a genuinely wonderful way to spend a morning, provided at least two members of your party are willing to walk under their own power.

Our goal is $5,000. Help us get there.

No donation is too small. Yes, we will absolutely tell the boys you donated. They will be thrilled. They are six and three and easily impressed.

Walking so our kids learn the world is bigger than our backyard.
